“This is America” is an expression of pain, anger, freedom, and hope as I experienced during this black lives matter movement during the initial protests and discourses and discussions across the country, in nyc, right outside my window and in my neighborhood, and in the workplace.
I painted it in the same manner I approach my soundtracks freestyle collection, to the music across various black lives matter playlists on Spotify and specifically after the title song by Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. This was more self care than it is social message. So many emotions flooded through me at this time and continue to do so especially as we march through Black History Month. and I had to respond. So this is my response, my statement.
The Soundtracks : Freestyle series and technique explores the nature of freestyling through painting, visually communicating a musicality and choreography of movement through color and application of strokes and paint onto a surface. The inspiration of each piece draws from my relationship with the medium, the relationship through songs and lyrics, and the musicality of each track and how I would reinterpret it into visual form rather than movement.
